Curriculum Development In Jamaica.

Introduction

According to the Jamaican Curriculum Guide for Children 4 to Five years, the fist written Jamaican pre-school curriculum for children four to six years old was completed in 1973 through the Project for Early Childhood Education (PECE), directed by Mr. D.R.B. Grant and funded by the Bernard van Leer Foundation.

The “PECE Curriculum Manual”, as it was called, was a very detailed instructional guide comprising 24 volumes totaling 4,988 pages. It provided a step-by-step approach for presenting content from traditional subject areas. The detailed format was necessary as the majority of para-professional teachers in the basic schools then, were inexperienced and lacked in-depth knowledge of essential child development and education principles and practices. The manual served as a guide in the fortnightly workshops presented by a core of teacher trainers to develop the teaching skills of the para-professional teachers.

Use the Comment Section to respond to the following question.

How would you feel if the early childhood education department in Jamaica should revert/go back to the PECE Curriculum Manual?

  1. I think it would be a good idea to because it would help practitioners at different levels of the early childhood education to see the alignment of instructional planning and children's development.

  2. I agree with you that it would provide guidance. But do you think teachers should enter the profession as untrained?

    1. I don't think it should be reverted reason being you would return to the same old roles of not being establish, following the same pattern as in this time things and time as change new ideas are always welcome to push you higher levels in learning.

  4. Yes guidance is important. But have you ever seen a book with over 4000 pages? I think many persons will not even open it.

  5. It should not be reverted, because the more thing change the more it remains the same.with new technology and madern age Teacher's need to take pride in their job and the group's set to oversee these institution must be sticker and follow protocol. The pioneers work too hard to improve education for us to go backwards.Heads must tool if school don't follow the ecc guidelines

    1. There is much room for improvement and those who fail to act need to be held accountable

  6. No, because each year your dealing with a new set of children and they will be more advanced with technology so sticking to one way kind of learning will not be the effective to teach those children who are exposed to other things that are more intriguing to get them involved in learning than doing something where there's no interest. So reverting would not be a good idea.

  7. I think both have their flaws. Therefore maybe there can a merge of both of them, that some elements of both would be would have to be display in the classroom for the betterment of the children and for accountability on the side of the teachers and the school by extension.
